Caking it in London

London is one of the great cake capitals, it is home to Wilton - the cake decorating powerhouse and grand daddy of modern cake decorating.  It is also a country obsessed with the elegant afternoon tea (aka high tea).

In the last decade several big names have emerged, such as Eric Lanlard of Cake boy, Peggy Porschen, Mitch Turner and cupcake powerhouses such as Primrose and Hummingbird.  All of them with famous fans, between them, these artists and patissiers bake for the likes of Elton John, Madonna, Liz Hurley, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Pierce Brosnan and the Queen, just to name a few.

So whilst in London, what better to do than to sample some of their delights.

First off the mark - the crazily busy Portobello markets on a cold dreary Saturday morning.  I had no idea there could be so many tourists in one street!!

What is at Portobello you might ask....well the original Hummingbird Bakery of course!

So pretty in pink inside and so many delicious choices.

I was however, on a curiosity mission.  My dear friend Amanda claims that the red velvet cake simply melts in your mouth and raved about it for weeks afterwards.  So, naturally, that is what one has to purchase......

I loved my cupcake, snug in its little American Chinese takeaway container, along with the environmentally friendly wooden forks.
Verdict?  Yes it was light and fluffy and the cream cheese butter icing was sinful and delicious.  A perfectly fine cupcake, though I prefer the Magnolia Bakery red velvet cupcakes (which I actually consumed in Dubai)

Next destination :  Primrose bakery

We visited the Delectable Jo, who is currently managing the stores during her sabbatical year in London.  We chose the Convent Garden store - as it was close to that evenings entertainment of Legally Blonde - the musical (big cities are great that way!).  Cute as a button and only seating about 12 people, it was not difficult to pack out this place.

A cup of tea, and a carrot cupcake (that you can just make out in the foreground, and we were on our way.

Of course that is not all we had....... the real test, was the Primrose vs Hummingbird challenge.
Verdict:  Carrot cake - Primrose won.  Hummingbird black bottom vs Primrose Cookies & cream - Hummingbird won.
The Primrose lemon drizzle cake (Jude Law's favourite) is divine, as is the subtle flavours of the earl grey cupcake.  Overall, a lot of fun in a blind tasting and no clear winner.

Next on the list, Cake Boy.

Liz Hurley says that Eric Lanlard makes the world's yummiest cakes, for a someone super slim to say that, well, I wasn't really convinced.  The fabulous Ms G is a huge Eric Lanlard fan, his followers of his show Glamour Pud on Lifestyle food channel will understand why.

I actually had no idea of who he was....no, I do not have pay TV....other than I had a book of his that I found interesting but not exactly life changing.  Finding the studio took us 2 hours as the trains were not running and the buses took forever!

On arrival though, it seemed all worth it when we were greeted with a front counter filled with these beautiful creations.

It was so hard to narrow the selection down!!

Jo had a hard time choosing which of the books to buy.... I of course had to add my two cents...seeing as I already had the other one, it wouldn't be hard to guess which one went home with me that day.

Yay!!  Glamorous afternoon tea!

Our final decision of Raspberry & white chocolate tart, Silky chocolate tart, Citron tart and a slice of cheesecake.  We also ended up taking away a selection of macarons, a raspberry swirl cupcake and a loaf of carrot cake!

The cakes presented on a porcelain tile with chocolate coated popping candy and freeze dried raspberries.  How delightful!  The highlight was definately the raspberry tart that was filled with the most amazing silky white chocolate pastry cream that was like nothing I've eaten before.

It turned out that the 2 hour trip was an aligning of the forces of fate, as within 5 minutes of us arriving, Eric turns up to pick up some papers.  Had we been 15 minutes earlier or later, we would have missed the chance to meet him completely!  Some things are just meant to be.

So, to the fabulous Ms G....eat your heart out!!

The perfect 10

How many 10s can you have in a date? Sunday 10.10.10!  I suppose a date like that doesn't always happen.... I think the next one is not until 2110.... I don't think I'll be around for that one, and I certainly won't be making cakes if I'm still around.

Bev & Ling chose the perfect date, for the perfect wedding.  (The rain even stopped just long enough for the ceremony - considering that it hasn't rained in more than a month here in Perth!)

Bev came to me at the beginning of the year with these cute candles which she had chosen as her bonbonieres.  And of course, she wanted them replicated in sugar for the cutting cake.

'Ahhh...easy job!' I thought to myself.
I was certainly not thinking that 3 hours into making them.......

What do you think?  Do they look like the real thing?

Wishing Bev and Ling a long and perfectly happy life together!!  Congratulations!

Also in celebration mood were Shann and Kevin.   Who's firstborn Kaeden celebrated his first month.  In a Chinese household, the first month marks the baby's debut, and the first time the baby and mummy are allowed outside the house.

Preparations started with all the boxes being assembled and cupcakes being baked.

They were presented in individual boxes

and in bigger boxes of 4.  Consisting of flavours of chocolate, white chocolate, taro and pink lemonade - just for variety!

Kaeden is so lucky to have so many people to love him, I'm sure he was spoilt with love and attention all weekend!

And I'll leave you with a sneak peek,

This beautiful embossed cupcake is a sample for a Swan Valley wedding next year.  It's an Indian Irish wedding, so I'm very excited to have so many design elements to work on!!

Stay posted!

A week of cakes for little ladies

Cake decorating is fun regardless of how you look at it.  The creative process of creating something pretty and delicious looking, is always special.  If you cook a fabulous meal, people will eat it, thank you but it doesn't compare to the sort of response you get from someone receiving a beautiful cake.  There is something about sugar and eggs and butter that make people extra happy!  Such was the case this week when Tracey ordered a cake for little Lucy's first birthday.

Yummy mummy Tracey fell in love with Koko the cupcake fairy from Paper Eskimo and as every woman knows, there is always a little girl inside of us who secretly wants a pink fairy cake!

Tracey called me afterwards to tell me how wonderful those few seconds of anticipation were as her hubby opened the lid of the cake box to show her the cake.  Luckily for me, it was how she had imagined it!! To be exact, she mentioned something about almost having tears in her eye......it just made my day!
I hope Lucy had lots of lovely memories of the awesome party her mum organised for her!

Moving onto more lovely ladies this week, was the Delectable & Sugar collaboration of a Rainbow pony carousel cake.  Requested by the birthday girl's best friend, the cake was a surprise to celebrate her 22nd birthday.   As this young lady is graduating this year, the cake also marked a special milestone.

Putting the finishing touches on the cake.  We worked and worked on this cake.....until the wee hours of the morning!
Thanks so much Jo!  I couldn't have dreamed for a better partner in crime!!

We wish Diana an unforgetable birthday!

It was awesome! Thank you so much for helping out! She was very very happy, and she keep hopping back and forth her room and fridge peeping the cake!  Thanks for everything. BTW the cake looked so good when the candles were lit! They literally looked like a glowing merry go round with real lights on! :))

And then of course there was the lovely Elaina, who turned a very impressive 15 years young!  Ah....what you wouldn't give to be 15 again!  *sigh*

I learnt all about pokemons and pokeballs for you Elaina!!  Pichu or Pikachu....that WAS the question!!

This one is definately Pichu.....I hope he can do some sort of impressive magical thing!  It sure looks like it was a really fabulous party!  Happy 15th Birthday Elaina, I hope it was Electric!!

Europe and Cupcakes for Astrology

It started as an interesting brief..... A cake in the colours of the Hungarian flag.....with some Hugarian dancing boots.....in red...... for an 18th birthday.

Well, reason being, that it was an Europe themed party.  How gorgeous!  Imagine all the wonderfully 'delicious' things you could dress up as!!

I had a great time making the boots!

As well as the boots, Isadora also got cupcakes with European flags...

and Burberry tartaned cupcakes.

So I hope she put on her dancing shoes and had a magnificent time celebrating being all "grown up"!!
On the other side of town, at the University of WA to be exact......Open day was in full force.  ICRAR -  the International Cebtre for Radio Astronomy Research wanted to lure potiential bright minds with cupcakes..... and hence....the ICRAR cupcakes

I wonder how they chose who got cupcakes.....!

 Two peas in a pod

Twins are not so unusual these days - but naturally conceived twins are truly something special.  And so it was the excited grandparents to be that threw the extravagant baby shower.  80 people and lots and lots of food and cake and cupcakes too.

The peas in the pod topper made to match the invitations and the cupcakes were the hit of the day!

Also this week Jessica Pedemont was in town taking the last week of Planet Cake courses for the year.   Jessica, chocolatier, pastry chef and cake decorating expert, who's classes I was in back when I first started training at PC headquarters.  So it was really exciting to be working with her again.

Busily covering their square cakes, believe you me, it's as challenging as it looks!!.

Although Jess makes it look like a breeze.

Precision = perfection

Class completed (sorry on the quality of the pics).  Everyone did brilliantly with beautiful earthy tones!
