Sweet Memories

Do desserts evoke happy memories for you?

I am one of those people who looks at the dessert section before I look at the rest of the menu....the sort of person who takes a trip to the cake display shortly after being seated.
Well, otherwise how else will you know how much room to leave for dessert?
It's just common sense, don't you think?

It was once said, that regardless of how bad a meal is, if the dessert is lovely, then all is forgiven....hence, dessert IS the most important course!

When I started giving in to my inner dessert passions, I started taking photos of lovely sweet things, some I've shared on here already, so, being a Monday and all and feeling like I need some sugar, here are some desserts from around town, the country (and the Asian Pacific).  Just for a tease!

Tea at Hardware Societe - Melbourne CBD

Chocolate & Raspberry cake (warmed) at the Sherbert Bakehouse - Perth

Macarons from Adriano Zumbo - Sydney
(Salted caramel and Chocolate earl grey get the special mention)

Lime Hot & Cold at Star Anise - Perth

Dulce de Leche wafer with Licorice icecream at Star Anise - Perth

The infamous Guava Snow Egg at Quay - Sydney
(yes it was worth the hype!)

Preserved wild cherry compote,
coconut cream, chuao chocolate crumble, milk meringue crystals,
cherry juice and chocolate sorbet *phew* at the Quay  - Sydney

Eight textured chocolate cake with Amadei Chocolate at Quay - Sydney
(we could differentiate about 6 textures)

Margie Carter's amazingly flawless Tigger cake at Planet Cake - Sydney
Watching this cake being made was a seriously exceptional experience!

Chocolate Hot & cold and fresh churros at San Churro - Perth

Almond croissant, and petit fours at La Galette de France - Perth

Citron tart & gianduja entremets at Choux Cafe - Perth

Chocolate icecream sandwich from the cart on Orchard Road - Singapore

Durian Puffs at the Goodwood Hotel - Singapore

Dessert Plate (flourless chocolate cake, matcha icecream, matcha roulade, creme brulee) at Azuma - Sydney

Salt water taffy by the sea - Bunbury

Apple tart tartin, citrus brulee and chocolate moulleux & salted caramel icecream at Must Wine Bar - Perth

and I could simply go on and on and on.......

But above all, when I think about sugar and all things sweet, is how happy it makes people and how special it is to share these things with the people you love.   In all those photos, there was always someone I love sitting next to me, indulging their crazy friend, sister, daughter who simply has to take photos of the dessert before anyone is allowed to eat them!

So be like Coby, and savour your cakes like it is the only thing that matters!!

The perfect 10

How many 10s can you have in a date? Sunday 10.10.10!  I suppose a date like that doesn't always happen.... I think the next one is not until 2110.... I don't think I'll be around for that one, and I certainly won't be making cakes if I'm still around.

Bev & Ling chose the perfect date, for the perfect wedding.  (The rain even stopped just long enough for the ceremony - considering that it hasn't rained in more than a month here in Perth!)

Bev came to me at the beginning of the year with these cute candles which she had chosen as her bonbonieres.  And of course, she wanted them replicated in sugar for the cutting cake.

'Ahhh...easy job!' I thought to myself.
I was certainly not thinking that 3 hours into making them.......

What do you think?  Do they look like the real thing?

Wishing Bev and Ling a long and perfectly happy life together!!  Congratulations!

Postscript 14/10/10

Bev said via email :
Hey Winnie,  Thanks for the cake... it was very cute on top of the stand.

Also in celebration mood were Shann and Kevin.   Who's firstborn Kaeden celebrated his first month.  In a Chinese household, the first month marks the baby's debut, and the first time the baby and mummy are allowed outside the house.

Preparations started with all the boxes being assembled and cupcakes being baked.

They were presented in individual boxes

and in bigger boxes of 4.  Consisting of flavours of chocolate, white chocolate, taro and pink lemonade - just for variety!

Kaeden is so lucky to have so many people to love him, I'm sure he was spoilt with love and attention all weekend!

And I'll leave you with a sneak peek,

This beautiful embossed cupcake is a sample for a Swan Valley wedding next year.  It's an Indian Irish wedding, so I'm very excited to have so many design elements to work on!!

Stay posted!

Pretty in pink

Only a short post this week.  My little brain cells this week are being dominated by the real world rather than the much more colourful and enjoyable cake world. *Sigh*  Some times real life just gets in the way.....

This week I had the pleasure of making this pretty pink cake for Betty.

Betty turned a 85 on Friday and is simply the most charming lady I know!
The cake was a taro & white chocolate top tier and dark chocolate bottom tier.  Design inspired by Lorinda Seto and the Pink Cake Box.

Betty loves nothing more that pottering in her butterfly filled garden and has been collecting turtle figurines for the last 40 years.  I believe her collection tops more than 5000 individual figurines from all around the world, with no two alike.  I hope this Sugar by Winz original adds to the collection!
